The Hague has had an Indonesian soul for decades. It is the city where memories of Indonesia have travelled in suitcases, in recipes, and in stories passed down from generation to generation. When the Tong Tong Fair came to an end, a void was left – a place that remained empty where the scent of cloves and the sounds of gamelan had once come together. The Jalan Jalan Festival was born out of that void, not as a repetition of what once was, but as a new celebration of a culture that is very much alive and evolving.

Jalan Jalan literally means walking, strolling, moving freely through a city and through the layers of memory hidden within it. The festival brings this sense of movement to the Lange Voorhout and the surrounding streets, with food, music, theatre and stories that give the Indonesian past a contemporary voice. Not merely as a look back, but as an invitation to look ahead together.

In collaboration with this festival, our gallery is exhibiting work by five artists who are all members of Pulchri and who each have their own links to Indonesian roots or connections with Indonesia. Patricia Steur, Jan Radersma, Hanny Heetman, Mariska Karto and Maryse Kok each demonstrate, in their own unique way, what travels with a culture when it shifts. They explore materials that carry memories, colours that evoke a landscape, and forms that hold onto something that had almost faded away. Together, they create a multi-layered portrait of roots that reveal themselves time and again, never standing still, always in dialogue with the present.

The exhibition will be on display during the festival and will remain open to visitors for some time afterwards. The Jalan Jalan Festival itself takes place on Friday 21st, Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd August, with Pulchri Studio serving as one of the venues for these festive days.
