During Tronies uit den Gheest, the Tuingalerie is filled with 175 portraits from Roland Maas’s Legacy series. The oil portraits are based on photographs of unknown people.
As Maas did not know the people he was painting, he did not need to focus on achieving an exact likeness. This gave him greater freedom to concentrate on the creative process of painting.
From abstract to realistic
Roland Maas began work on the series Legacy in 2017 and is still working on it. Initially, the focus was mainly on an abstract approach to portraiture. Later, his attention shifted increasingly towards realism and the expression of character.
As a result, the Tuingalerie showcases a variety of approaches to portraiture. The 175 works on display explore the multifaceted nature of portraiture as a theme.
