Jacqueline Louter – BETWEEN || TUSSEN

At the heart of BETWEEN || TUSSEN lies the tension between what you see and what remains hidden. Louter works from staged photographs made in her studio in Delft, building compositions from carefully selected objects, with a clear preference for second-hand items sourced from thrift shops. These objects bring their own history with them, a quality that resonates through the atmosphere and layering of the final image.

Flowers as carriers of meaning

Botanical elements are a recurring motif in Louter's work. Flowers and branches do not function as decoration here, but as symbols with multiple simultaneous layers of meaning: historical, mystical and personal. That combination gives the works an open, sometimes enigmatic quality.

The inspiration for the 'Between' series comes from Symbolism, with particular attention to the French painter Odilon Redon. Around 1900–1901, Redon created a series of panels in which loose flowers and branches appear to float in an undefined space, without clear context or timeframe. Redon described his own work as impossible to define: like music, it places the viewer in the ambiguous realm of the indeterminate. That idea forms a recognisable foundation beneath the works Louter presents here.
