Between Light and Stillness - The Hague Vocal Ensemble
On Sunday 6 December, The Hague Vocal Ensemble, conducted by Angeliki Ploka, presents Between Light and Stillness, an intimate and atmospheric choral concert at the Deutsche Evangelische Kirche in The Hague.
As the festive season approaches, this programme invites audiences to experience Advent beyond its familiar celebrations: as a time of reflection, anticipation and quiet transformation. Through a carefully curated selection of contemporary choral works, the ensemble explores themes of devotion, human vulnerability, suffering and the enduring presence of hope.
An Advent Journey Through Darkness, Compassion and Hope
The musical journey begins with Laura Sheils' Adam lay ybounden, presented in its Dutch premiere, followed by Jonathan Dove's Three Kings and Ambrož Čopi's Three Sacred Hymns (Hommage to Schnittke). Together, these works offer different perspectives on faith, mystery and spiritual contemplation, moving between luminous harmonies, expressive intensity and moments of stillness. The programme also features the Dutch premiere of Costas Tsougras' Popse Christos genithike (Tonight Christ Was Born), bringing a moment of warmth and celebration.
The concert culminates in David Lang's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Little Match Girl Passion. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's tragic fairy tale and the musical structure of Bach's St Matthew Passion, this extraordinary composition transforms the story of a vulnerable child into a profound meditation on suffering, compassion and our shared humanity. Through its restrained musical language and emotional intensity, the work invites listeners to reflect on those who remain unseen and unheard.
Beyond the music, Between Light and Stillness offers a moment to pause amid the bustle of the festive season. The intimate setting creates space for contemplation and personal interpretation, allowing each listener to connect with the music and its themes in their own way.
More than a traditional Christmas concert, Between Light and Stillness is an invitation to discover how music can illuminate the fragile space between darkness and hope.
