Stoomtrein Zuiderpark

Hidden in the heart of Zuiderpark is one of The Hague’s most unique family outings. At Stoomgroep West Zuiderpark, you’re not just stepping onto a train, but into a piece of nostalgia. Puffing steam locomotives, old-fashioned railway crossings and volunteers who clearly enjoy working on the trains have been creating a special experience here since 1975. From families with young children to fans of engineering and model building: the little trains in Zuiderpark remain a beloved tradition for many people in The Hague.

Under steam since 1975

Stoomgroep West Zuiderpark started in 1975 as a model engineering club for enthusiasts of steam-powered model trains. What once began with a small 350-metre track has grown over the years into an extensive miniature railway site in the middle of Zuiderpark.

More tracks, switches and buildings were added throughout the years. Since 2007, there has even been an extra route running deeper into the park: the so-called Parkbaan. Today, the site contains around five kilometres of railway track. Not only steam trains operate here — electric, diesel and hydraulic models are also part of the collection.

A day out with the trains in Zuiderpark

You stand at the station while the steam locomotive slowly starts to hiss and puff. Moments later, the whistle blows and the train begins its journey. The wagons are filled with children waving enthusiastically, but adults secretly enjoy the ride through Zuiderpark just as much.

As soon as you board, your ticket is clipped with an old-fashioned conductor’s punch. The train then rolls into the park, passing trees, bushes and railway crossings. You smell the steam, hear the bells ringing and watch the barriers close as the locomotive passes by. For a moment, it feels like stepping back in time.

International Steam Days

Besides the regular running days, Stoomgroep West Zuiderpark organises the International Steam Days around King’s Day every year. During these special days, model builders from the Netherlands and abroad come to Zuiderpark to showcase their steam-powered creations and other miniature models. Visitors are welcome to admire the trains, machines and craftsmanship up close.

Behind the scenes of the steam trains

Back at the station, it quickly becomes clear how much care goes into maintaining the trains. Volunteers refill water tanks, maintain the locomotive fires and keep everything polished and running smoothly. At Stoomgroep West Zuiderpark, it’s not only about driving trains, but also about craftsmanship and a love for engineering.

A special detail: almost everything on the site has been built by the members themselves. From the locomotives and wagons to the tracks, signals and even the clubhouse. What started as a hobby for a group of model builders has grown into a unique piece of engineering heritage in The Hague. The greenery on the site is maintained together with employees of STiP from the Municipality of The Hague.

Interested in becoming a volunteer yourself? From maintaining trains and railway tracks to helping behind the scenes, new enthusiasts are always welcome. No time to volunteer, but still a fan of the association? Becoming a donor or sponsor is also possible.

More than just large trains

On sunny days, smaller model trains in Madurodam-style scale can also be seen running around the tracks. Alongside the larger miniature trains, visitors can enjoy a colourful collection of locomotives passing by. For many children, these smaller trains are just as impressive.

The association consists of members of all ages, from young train enthusiasts to experienced builders who have been active for decades. Together, they make sure the trains continue running every season.

Children’s parties and groups

There are also options for children’s birthday parties, schools and larger groups. Children can enjoy unlimited train rides, while the spacious grounds are ideal for having lunch or a picnic at the cosy picnic tables.

Opening hours and Parkbaan

From April through September, Stoomgroep West Zuiderpark is open to visitors. Trains operate on Wednesdays from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM and on Sundays from 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

On Sundays, the popular Parkbaan also operates. This extra-long route runs deeper into Zuiderpark and is available from 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM. Separate fares apply for this ride.

In case of extreme weather or a shortage of volunteers, trains may not operate. No extra running days are organised during the summer holidays.
