The Fisherman’s Wife of Scheveningen is located next to the Scheveningen boulevard. This woman in traditional Scheveningen attire is looking out at sea where she once expected one or several of her beloved ones to return. It commemorates the Scheveningen fishermen but also Scheveningen residents who were part of the Royal Marine and merchant shipping, and perished with their ships in the years of World War II.
Since a number of years, the local Old Church houses an annual commemoration that is followed by a visit to the statue. Once arrived, the poem on the base of the statue is recited, wreaths are laid and floral greetings are made.
The poem goes:
THE SEA, WHICH CONTINUES TAKING
WILL ONE DAY GIVE BACK
ALL WHO NEVER RETURNED
TO HIM WHO ESCAPED FIRST
THE LORD OF WIND AND WATER
TO CHRIST THE VICTOR
