Personal stories about ancestry and identity are central to the exhibition by Farren van Wyk.

In her first solo museum exhibition, Mixedness is my Mythology, South African-Dutch photographer Farren van Wyk explores the complex historical relationship between migration, ethnicity, colonialism and apartheid in South Africa and the Netherlands. Born in the final year of apartheid to a South African mother and Dutch father, Van Wyk was classified as 'coloured'. From the age of six, she grew up in the Netherlands, surrounded by diverse cultures. These influences are clearly visible in her work.

Van Wyk consciously chooses the traditional black-and-white imagery of photography. In this 'colourlessness', she can redefine what it means to be a person of colour and work towards acceptance of her and her family's mixed identity. By creating their own iconography, they create their own mythology and an ode to people of colour.
