Adrie Kweekel – QUAKE
24 Oct - 15 Nov
Pulchri Studio in The Hague is hosting QUAKE, a photography exhibition by Adrie Kweekel. The exhibition shows how Kweekel's visual language seeks out the boundary between what you see and what you bring to the image yourself.
Adrie Kweekel works from the street, but the street is never really the subject. It is a starting point – a place where light, movement and chance come together. His images are unplanned. A particular quality of light, a passing figure, a subtle tremor in the frame: these are the triggers. He uses deliberate camera movement and long exposures, but the result feels anything but mechanical. What remains are compositions that freeze something that was, in fact, in motion.
People without faces, images with meaning
In QUAKE, people are almost everywhere, but rarely recognisable. Kweekel deliberately lets go of identity. His figures carry no name and no story – they are human presence, nothing more. That opens up space. Looking at these images, you fill in the gaps yourself: a memory, a feeling, a moment that suddenly surfaces. That interplay between photographer and viewer is central to his work.
A visual language decades in the making
Although QUAKE as a series took shape during the pandemic, its roots go much further back. As early as the late seventies, Kweekel was experimenting with movement and anonymity in photography. After many years as a photographer, he deliberately chose an autonomous artistic path, separate from commercial commissions or documentary conventions. Not the spectacular, but the ordinary is his starting point – to question reality rather than confirm it.
QUAKE at Pulchri Studio in The Hague
Pulchri Studio is one of The Hague's oldest artists' associations and regularly provides a platform for distinctive visual work. QUAKE fits that tradition: photographic images that do not immediately give up their meaning, but stay with you.
