Before the Story Starts – URLAND
Theater aan het Spui presents Before the Story Starts, an experimental one-man performance by theatre company URLAND. In this immersive show, master storyteller Thomas Dudkiewicz takes audiences to the moment just before everything begins.
What lies before the beginning? That is the central question of Before the Story Starts. Thomas Dudkiewicz, the master storyteller behind this solo show, moves through a surrealist universe he conjures using nothing but his voice. No set, no tricks: pure language and imagination. The performance takes place on that strange threshold where a story is not yet a story, a space full of cryptic hosts, unreliable guides and philosophical paths that lead nowhere.
URLAND at Theater aan het Spui
URLAND is known for productions that stretch or abandon theatrical conventions altogether. Before the Story Starts is no exception. Inspired by The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Being John Malkovich and the philosophy of Alan Watts, Dudkiewicz constructs a world that feels simultaneously familiar and completely disorienting. As he encounters his own alter egos, he raises questions that refuse to leave you: why do people tell stories? How does meaning arise? And what if there is no answer at all?
Five stars and a highlight at Oerol
The show earned five stars from both NRC and Trouw, while de Volkskrant awarded four. Festival press at Oerol called it one of the festival's standout moments. Theater aan het Spui in The Hague brings this acclaimed production to Zaal 2, for anyone who thinks theatre has already shown them everything.
