Kunstmuseum The Hague is celebrating its collection with icons from the past, present and future! From 10 October, KM (New) Icons will be on display; this exhibition presents the museum’s collection in a new light – featuring the well-known favourites, so you can always return to your favourite pieces.

Works by Charley Toorop, Paula Rego, Vincent van Gogh, Louise Bourgeois, Christian Dior, Erwin Olaf and many others are on display. The museum celebrates the collection in all its forms, featuring iconic works from modern art, photography, fashion, contemporary art and applied art.

Icons of the past, present and future

In 2026, it will be 160 years since the collection of the Kunstmuseum The Hague was founded. Since the establishment of the Association for the Founding of a Museum of Modern Art in 1866, works have been purchased, acquired, forgotten, selected and curated. We honour this rich history whilst looking to the future. What are the icons of today and tomorrow?

A new exhibition will therefore be on display this autumn in Berlage’s historic building. In addition, three stairwells have been transformed by three contemporary artists who engage in a dialogue with the building and the collection: Hadassah Emmerich, Natasja Kensmil and Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum.

What makes an icon?

The exhibition and the public programme engage visitors, staff, residents of The Hague, creators and partners, posing questions such as: what does ‘icon’ mean to you, and what makes something an icon?
