A tribute to Herbie Hancock
Pianist and composer Rembrandt Frerichs pays his own tribute to Speak Like a Child, Herbie Hancock’s 1968 jazz album. Hancock recorded the album during a time of social unrest, creating music that offered space for purity and connection.
Almost sixty years later, Rembrandt Frerichs is using this idea as the starting point for a newly composed work. Classical musicians, contemporary performers and experienced jazz musicians come together in this piece.
What can you expect from this jazz concert?
Rembrandt Frerichs builds on the distinctive sound of the original album. Instruments that normally form the middle voice are given an equal role.
Rather than solo wind instruments, the music centres on collective sounds and direct interaction. The piano takes centre stage. The result is a multi-layered concert with rhythm and scope for musical imagination.
