Patricia van de Camp - Being There

An exhibition on presence and transience

The title Being There – ‘to be there’ – has multiple meanings. In their collaborative work, vandeCamp & Heesterbeek explore how a person is present in an image and where the boundaries of that presence lie. Minimalism plays an important role in this.

For Patricia van de Camp, the title also carries personal significance. Since her diagnosis with ALS, the awareness of time and presence has become inextricably linked to her daily life. The exhibition demonstrates how art can be a means of expressing vulnerability, strength and the desire to continue creating.

Minimalism as a new form of expression

Due to her illness, moving around and working are becoming increasingly difficult. As a result, her artistic process has changed. In her most recent work, Patricia van de Camp deliberately opts for minimalist images, in which a great deal is conveyed using few means. It is precisely this simplicity that gives her the space to continue expressing her creativity.

Creating together from a distance

The creative process continues to evolve within vandeCamp & Heesterbeek too. The artists have been working entirely remotely for many years. Using WhatsApp, Messenger and digital files, they collaborate on new artworks, each from their own location.

This unique way of working together makes it possible to continue developing and giving shape to new ideas, despite the physical limitations imposed by ALS.
