Samuel Escobar - The Garden of Allegories
11 Jul - 4 Aug
Discover The Garden of Allegories at Pulchri Studio. Samuel Escobar exhibits oil paintings in which classical Flemish painting and a Guatemalan visual language come together.
The Garden of Allegories is on display to mark the bicentenary of diplomatic relations between the Netherlands and Guatemala. The exhibition has been made possible in part by the Guatemalan Embassy in the Netherlands.
Classical painting as a source of inspiration
Samuel Escobar draws inspiration from the early Flemish masters of the 15th and 16th centuries. His paintings are characterised by refined details, small formats and the use of oil paint. The application of various layers of paint and glazes creates depth and a unique play of light.
A distinctive visual style
Escobar combines classical painting techniques with his own Guatemalan background and imagination. His paintings form a dialogue between different cultures and traditions. In this way, the exhibition shows how a centuries-old technique can take on new meaning within contemporary art.
