Scrooge – Theatre Performance Based on Charles Dickens
19 Dec - 27 Dec
Theatre production Scrooge, performed by Sijtze van der Meer, returns to the stage of Theater Branoul in The Hague in December 2026. This annual Christmas production is based on the classic story by Charles Dickens and is freshly adapted each year by Manon Barthels, with new angles while staying true to the original.
Every year, Theater Branoul finds a new way to tell the story of Ebenezer Scrooge. The same unredeemable miser, the same haunting by spirits of past, present and future, but with fresh accents that keep it relevant. Sharp humour, laughter, a tear, and ultimately that long-awaited change of heart: the formula works, and Branoul puts its own stamp on it each season. Recommended for ages 12 and up.
Scrooge at Theater Branoul: tradition with an edge
Manon Barthels' adaptation keeps the story surprisingly fresh. Director and performer Sijtze van der Meer adds a new layer to Scrooge each year without doing violence to the source material. The result is a performance that feels both familiar and unexpected, making for a great afternoon or evening out to get into the Christmas spirit.
