Sound or Not festival

What is music, really, and where does it end? Sound or Not spends three days asking that question in a variety of ways. The festival draws inspiration from Boundary Music (1963), a text score by Japanese Fluxus artist Mieko Shiomi, which instructs musicians to produce the quietest sound possible. Working from that spirit, Sound or Not playfully yet seriously probes the limits of the audible.

Music theatre and experimental works at Concordia CC

Over three days, Modelo62 programmes a mix of music theatre, works from the tradition of experimental music, and new interdisciplinary performances that emerged from collaborations between makers across very different disciplines. Concordia CC in The Hague provides the setting, a place where sound and silence alternate and where the question "is this still music?" keeps coming back.

Modelo62 and the edges of sound

Modelo62 is closely connected to Het Koorenhuis and has shaped Sound or Not from start to finish. The choice of Shiomi's Boundary Music as a starting point says a lot about the festival's approach: not provocation for its own sake, but genuine curiosity about what happens when musical conventions are let go. Visitors who arrive with fixed ideas about what a concert is tend to leave with new ones.
