Trumpeter Teus Nobel performing on stage at a jazz concert

Jazz at PAARD: Teus Nobel 4 performs live in GR8, the intimate concert hall at PAARD in The Hague. The programme features the new album Child's Play, the eleventh, and most personal, record by Edison Award-winner and trumpeter Teus Nobel.

Child's Play is not a lighthearted affair. The album took shape during a period of real personal difficulty, and Nobel found his way back to music through the example of his children: unpolished, imaginative and fearless. That spirit runs through the compositions, which balance tight structure against open-ended improvisation.

Teus Nobel 4: a new ensemble

For this project, Nobel assembled a fresh line-up. His previous group, the Liberty Group, released three albums and performed at North Sea Jazz Festival twice, but with Teus Nobel 4 he is after something rawer and more direct. Guitarist Teis Semey brings a new sonic dimension to the ensemble, alongside the rhythm section of double bassist Jasper Høiby and drummer Niek de Bruijn. Together they form a tight, high-energy group with serious stage presence.

Documentary Human First sets the tone

Before Teus Nobel 4 takes the stage, the documentary Human First is screened. British filmmakers Simon Sixsmith and Steve Denniss followed Nobel and his wife during the period leading up to Child's Play, capturing how an artist reclaims creative space when life gets hard. The film runs approximately fifty minutes and offers an intimate look at how the album came to be. The concert then starts at 20:00, with doors opening at 19:30.
