The Passage in The Hague consists of an old and a new section. Both passages have their own unique atmospheric ambience with a generous range of shops. The new part of the Passage makes an attractive connection between Grote Marktstraat and Spuistraat with lots of special shops.
Historic shopping arcade with allure
The Hague Passage ranks with the passages of Milan, Moscow and Brussels among the most beautiful shopping galleries still in existence in Europe. Built in 1882 for the dignitaries after Paris' example, the passage possesses a magnificent aura with its arcades, glass domes, walkways and carved facades. The glass-covered shopping street is home to several specialty shops that exude a contemporary allure.
Given its fine architecture, the Passage unmistakably offers an atmosphere such as is rarely found in modern shopping centres. The new extension of the monumental building towards Grote Marktstraat has created a hypermodern covered shopping street: The New Passage. Stylish and atmospheric, with a diversity of top shops!
The new Passage
In keeping with the historical section of De Passage, the new section boasts a high, glass ceiling, but with a modern twist. Architect Bernard Tschumi has given Nieuwe Haagse Passage a very light and open design. Tschumi drew inspiration from Delft Blue for the blue and white tiled ceramic facade. The new section of De Passage creates an attractive connection between Grote Marktstraat and Spuistraat with countless unique stores.
Stores in the Pasage
With the arrival of the Passage in 1885, it was expected that the luxury items ordered by private individuals in Paris until then would now be sold by the shopkeepers of the Passage. Until then, department stores from Paris, for example, sent many of their items by post to the Netherlands. Rich ladies in the late nineteenth century first sent their servants to the shop to make orders. Only then did they take to the streets themselves. This gave each layer of the population its own time to shop in The Hague Passage. The maids came in the mornings and evenings and the upper class ladies shopped between 2pm and 5pm.
The Passage is still characterised by a specialist high-quality product range and a sense of international allure. For special coffee and tea, high-quality cookware, handmade chocolates, mouth-watering delicacies, designer gifts, shoes, art and special pens, the Passage is the place to be.
