Jip Smit as Katinka on stage during Motherland: The Return of Katinka

Motherland: The Return of Katinka is a theatre production by Jip Smit, playing at Theater aan het Spui in The Hague. It is the third and final instalment of the Motherland trilogy, directed by Ada Ozdogan.

In the world of Motherland, a woman's life lasts exactly three days. Enough to give birth, no more. Katinka defies that logic: she has the lifespan of a man, and with it the promise of ending the curse for good. In The Return of Katinka, a vision from her mother sends her on a mission to return a magical stone to the Pool of Mitra, deep in her homeland, the Islands of Treis Méres. The road there, however, is anything but straightforward.

Katinka faces the choice of her life

When the king of the Islands offers Katinka a tempting deal – a royal crown in exchange for the magical stone – she is confronted with the question that has been simmering throughout the entire trilogy: how much can one individual sacrifice for the greater good? Jip Smit doesn't ask that question in dry or didactic terms, but through humour, cartoonish exaggeration, and a heroine who pulls you effortlessly into her adventure.

Hilarious and sharp – a trilogy that ends in style

Smit and director Ada Ozdogan have a rare gift: they wrap themes like power, revolution, and justice in a form that makes you laugh out loud and think in equal measure. The first two instalments – Motherland (winner of the Best of Fringe Award 2020) and Motherland II Katinka Strikes Back – built a loyal following. This third part closes the circle without losing any momentum. Fans of the earlier shows won't want to miss it, and newcomers will find themselves drawn straight into Katinka's world.
