The Koninklijke Schouwburg is a city palace for everyone. Put on your nicest dress or relax on your sneakers. It's all allowed. Treat yourself and someone else to an evening of theater, cabaret, a theater concert or opera. Café Paradijs is located at the very top of the Schouwburg. An intimate theater where the actors of the National Theater sometimes invite you to come and see their own work. And on Sunday mornings it is extra cozy here with performances for the little ones.

The National Theatre

The National Theatre in The Hague is the largest touring theatre company in the Netherlands and produces performances for audiences across the country. It is the only national theatre organisation to produce performances for all ages. The National Theatre has three venues in The Hague: the Koninklijke Schouwburg, Theater aan het Spui and Zaal 3

Of the three venues, the largest and oldest theatre is the Koninklijke Schouwburg. Originally built as a wing of a city palace, it has been a place for people to gather for performances for over two hundred years. In addition, the Royal Theatre is a central venue for festivals, celebrations and commemorations, such as 4 and 5 May, Keti Koti, Maroon Day, the Gnawa Festival and the National Commemoration of 15 August 1945. During the large-scale renovation of the Binnenhof, the King delivers the annual Speech from the Throne at the Royal Theatre.

Since its construction as an 18th-century city palace, the Koninklijke Schouwburg has been extensively modernised and renovated, making it a true city palace for everyone. Inside, you will find the Main Auditorium (650 seats), the more intimate Paradijs auditorium (74 seats) and the classic foyers. The Royal Theatre offers a varied programme focusing on theatre, opera, cabaret, family shows and (classical) concerts, amongst other things. At Restaurant Sol, you can book a table to enjoy a delicious meal before a performance, before settling into the auditorium.
