Barbecuing and picnicking in The Hague

Nothing screams 'summer' like a well-stocked cooler, grilled delicacies, and a blanket on the grass. In The Hague, you'll find plenty of green parks, hidden spots, and beach locations where you can barbecue or picnic. This guide helps you choose the ideal spot for a relaxed summer afternoon.

Where to barbecue in The Hague?

In The Hague, you're not allowed to barbecue everywhere, but there are a few specially designated spots where you can! Make sure not to cause any nuisance and clean up your belongings properly.

Barbecue areas

There are special places in The Hague where you can grill undisturbed. These locations are not only beautifully and spaciously set up but also considerate of local residents and other visitors. You'll find extra waste bins there, so you can leave everything tidy afterward. Curious where you can light the barbecue? Below are the official barbecue zones:

  • Recreational area Madestein

  • Vlaskamp

  • Westbroekpark (play meadow)

  • Zuiderpark (on the play meadow and the Roggeveld)

  • De Uithof

  • Noorderstrand

Where is barbecuing not allowed?

Places where barbecuing is not allowed: The Japanese Garden, The Rosarium, Park De Verademing, and the Westduinpark. At locations where barbecuing is prohibited, this is clearly indicated. Forest ranger Simon indicates that it's not allowed in the Westduinpark due to protected nature. You're not allowed to leave the paths and therefore not allowed to barbecue. This also applies to the Rosarium in the Westbroekpark. In the city park De Verademing, there are too many playing children, making it no longer safe.

Handy tips for barbecuing in the park

Always use a barbecue on legs; placing it directly on the grass is not allowed as it damages the grass. Only dispose of glowing coals once they have cooled down, or use the special coal bins available at some locations. Waste such as food scraps and packaging belongs in the trash bin. If it's full, take your garbage home. This prevents nuisance from vermin and keeps the park clean for everyone.
