A painting of a skyline featuring water and clouds.

Bert Welmers is turning 80. And now he is looking back on his life, especially his youth. This has inspired him to paint a series of landscapes of the IJssel, the river of his youth.

Bert uses various techniques: watercolour, oil paint and pen/charcoal sketches. This time, the focus is on oil paintings.
Bert usually paints en plein air: outdoors, immersing himself in his surroundings, looking, listening and feeling. For him, it is not about literalness, but about the experience.
Bert paints figuratively. Characteristic of his style is the quick, loose touch with which he tries to capture the essence of his subject.
The depth in the image, the vast distances of the river landscape, the intimacy of nature and, above all, the light are always the starting point for his paintings.
