Sander Coers, A Secret Feeling of Bliss, 2024

The exhibition Generasi 3.0 – The Stories We Carry explores how younger generations use art to investigate their family history in former Dutch East Indies.

From 11 October 2025 to 22 March 2026, Fotomuseum The Hague presents Generasi 3.0 – The Stories We Carry. Eight contemporary photographers and artists explore their family roots in the former Dutch East Indies. Growing up in the Netherlands, often without open discussions about the colonial past, they ask: how do you move between cultures? And how do you make sense of an unspoken history?

This third generation is more distanced from colonial events, which creates space to study their family past. Through photography, video, textiles, audio and performance, the artists share personal quests to understand their background and identity. Projects often start with something tangible: a photo album, an object or a story passed down through generations.

Although these artworks are personal, they resonate with over 2 million Dutch citizens with roots in the former East Indies and with people from wider migration backgrounds. For others, the exhibition offers a fresh perspective on a shared past and its ongoing impact.
