Bach Reframed
Experience a remarkable evening of classical music, innovation, and international compositions during Bach Reframed. Organist Hannes Minnaar, winner of several prestigious awards including the Dutch Music Prize, joins forces with the Netherlands Bach Consort to present a fresh interpretation of Bach’s famous Great Organ Mass (Clavierübung III).
A remarkable concert in which past and present meet in an inspiring musical adventure!
Organist Hannes Minnaar, winner of the prestigious Dutch Music Prize, brings Bach’s monumental Great Organ Mass (Clavier-Übung III) to life on the famous Bätz-organ (1762), played by Mozart in 1765, in the Lutheran Church in The Hague. This collection of masterpieces forms the beating heart of the programme and enters into dialogue with the voices of a new generation of composers.
“Even within Bach’s own oeuvre, Clavier-Übung III, also known as his Organ Mass, stands as a pinnacle achievement: his most important work for the instrument that was perhaps dearest to him. It is unparalleled music in all its facets—profound, contemplative, overwhelming, and utterly brilliant!”, says Minnaar.
The works of Johann Sebastian Bach are interwoven with brand-new compositions by emerging international composers from the Netherlands, Canada, Egypt, Iran, and Curaçao. Bach’s music served as the inspiration for these newly commissioned works, written for and performed by the singers of the Netherlands Bach Consort. How does Bach resonate in the ears of today’s young composers? What new colours, stories, and perspectives emerge from this encounter with a centuries-old masterpiece?
For these compositions, poet Jan-Jaap Stegeman has written new texts that bring the original themes and messages into the present day.
