Photographer Stephan Vanfleteren is creating new work for the Mauritshuis in The Hague. In all 16 rooms, he draws inspiration from paintings in the collection.

Stephan Vanfleteren is creating a new photo series for the Mauritshuis, inspired by the permanent collection. In each room, he chooses a painting or theme as his starting point. In this way, he explores the essence and meaning of the works.

Together with managing director Martine Gosselink, he took a fresh look at the collection. Which ideas and symbols from the 17th century are still recognisable today? And what do the paintings tell us now?

Vanfleteren's photographs engage in dialogue with the 17th-century masters. Through his lens, visitors can take a fresh look at well-known works from the Mauritshuis. This creates an encounter between photography and painting, between past and present.
