Backbone & Donna - Sounds
Ballet
SOUNDS is a physical ode to the power of Afro-Caribbean music, in which dance, sound and energy become one.
Over SOUNDS
Music is part of human life. And SOUNDS is a physical ode to the power of music, in which dance, sound and energy become one. Choreographer Donna Chittick interweaves Caribbean and African influences with hip hop to take us on a journey to her roots in Sint Maarten. Four dancers and a singer bring rhythms and movements to life that are deeply rooted in identity, memory and community.
Soca, an energetic and rhythmic Caribbean music style, and konpa, a danceable style from Haiti with flowing rhythms and melodies, form the musical basis together with African sounds. These sounds are not only audible but also tangible, visible and palpable through vibrating belts and rhythmic light. This makes the performance accessible to people with hearing impairments.
SOUNDS celebrates Afro-Caribbean heritage and echoes the power of generations before, during and after the Transatlantic slave trade with music as a universal language. Let yourself be carried away. Feel the beats.
