On Tuesday 31 March, Romanian author Mircea Cărtărescu (Bucharest, 1956) will discuss his new novel Theodoros. This special event will focus on his so-called pseudo-historical novel, in which history and fantasy come together in a grand and compelling story.

Mircea Cărtărescu discusses his novel Theodoros

The novel Theodoros is set in the nineteenth century and follows the spectacular rise and fall of Teodor, the son of two humble servants of a Romanian aristocrat. From an early age, Teodor dreams of becoming emperor. Inspired by the stories of Alexander the Great told to him by his Greek mother, he becomes obsessed with power and fame. As an adult, he proves willing to go to great lengths to realise his ambitions.

Mircea Cărtărescu is considered one of the most important contemporary writers from Eastern Europe. He has published several novels and poetry collections, and his work has been translated worldwide. In Romania, he has received all the major literary awards, including the State Prize for The Knower. His novel Solenoide was internationally acclaimed as a masterpiece and won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Dublin Literary Award, among others. He was also nominated for the International Booker Prize.

After the conversation with Mircea Cărtărescu, there will be a book signing session. Visitors can purchase books on site and have them signed.
