Three old, partially rusted cars in a dilapidated setting.

The work of artist Ed van der Kooy navigates the realms of beauty, alienation and social commentary. In his paintings, he explores themes such as identity, time and change.

About Ed van der Kooy

Ed van der Kooy (The Hague, 1956) draws inspiration from his travels and observations of different cultures and landscapes. Nepal, China and neighbouring countries in particular play a significant role in his work.

His art revolves around observing, exploring and questioning themes such as identity, time and beauty.

What can you expect?

Van der Kooy became known for his large, detailed portraits, including his paintings of Chinese women. These works stand out for their precise execution, composition and attention to detail.

At the same time, his work is constantly evolving. During the coronavirus pandemic, he created a new series of oil paintings on paper. In these works, he explored themes such as silence, alienation and social unrest.

The paintings from this period are more free-flowing and direct in character, yet retain the meticulousness that characterises his work.

About the exhibition

In his recent work, Ed van der Kooy reflects on a world transformed by pandemics, climate issues and social tensions. Some of the images appear serene and almost idyllic, whilst others evoke a more unsettling or alienating feeling.

It is precisely this tension between beauty and unease that forms a key starting point in his body of work.
