About Esther van der Wallen
Esther van der Wallen is a photographer. Her work focuses on authenticity, presence and the courage to reveal one’s true self. She captures moments where vulnerability and strength converge, with a focus on the female form and emotional openness.
Her portraits are born out of a genuine sense of connection. During photo shoots, Esther creates a calm and safe environment in which trust and openness can flourish. This is reflected in her spontaneous and authentic images.
Esther works in the studio, on location and on the street. She has a keen eye for light, composition and her surroundings. Her work has been influenced by photographers such as Miroslav Tichý, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Man Ray. This influence is evident in the balance between spontaneity and direction.
Previous exhibitions
Esther van der Wallen’s previous exhibitions include Details Feminine, which captures the female body in close-up, PROUD!, a photo series about women with alopecia universalis, and Joie de vivre, a personal tribute to her father.
Through her work, Esther invites visitors to look closely and reflect on what is both visible and tangible.
What can you expect from Nightlife?
The exhibition Nightlife looks back on a period when nightlife played a significant role in Esther van der Wallen’s life. In the 1990s, nightlife represented a fresh start for her, following a period when everything had come to a standstill.
Clubs like the RoXY in Amsterdam were places where everyone came together, regardless of their background or identity. You didn’t have to explain anything or belong to any particular group. The lights, the music and the energy of the night created a sense of freedom and space.
At the same time, Esther found peace and balance in nature. Together, these worlds tell the story of a period centred on freedom, rediscovery and personal development.
