From the Depot! Heritage to love - In the lower halls
4 Mar - 8 Jun
Exhibition
For almost all museums, including Museum Rijswijk, most of the collection is stored in the depot. The roughly 15,000 Rijswijk objects cannot possibly all be displayed. In recent years, the museum has already brought many unknown objects into the limelight through thematic exhibitions, but there are many more that urgently deserve a place on display. For the exhibition Uit het depot, all cupboards and drawers were opened.
Each room surprises with its own subject. For instance, the 19th-century poet Hendrik Tollens, the namesake of the old museum building, returns. Another room surprises with a diversity of portraits of people who all have a link to Rijswijk. In the Salon, you will find the pearls that should not be missing from the museum collection, showing Rijswijk through the ages. Of course, the old village will also be featured. Prints, drawings and photos offer a glimpse of the village and its many estates. Much has disappeared but the rich museum collection makes some of that history visible again. You see the Rijswijkers and their daily lives with the objects that are part of it: pots and pans, toys, handicrafts, tools and more witnesses of everyday life.
All this is heritage Rijswijk. It ranges from grand and compelling to small and seemingly insignificant. Seemingly, because regardless of size and appearance, all objects in the collection have a ‘story’. If you take those stories from the depot and tie them together, a rich history of Rijswijk emerges. Not one of facts and years but of objects that are still recognisable, familiar and attractive. In short, heritage to love.
