Een portret foto van Robert D. Kaplan

24 and 25 June, The Hague will be the scene of the NATO summit, with 45 heads of government and more than 8,500 ministers, journalists and other participants. A perfect moment, then, for Crossing Border Festival and Het Nationale Theater to organise an in-depth conversation on current geopolitical developments at the Koninklijke Schouwburg on Wednesday evening 25 June.

A literary look at geopolitics

Renowned American journalist and political writer Robert D. Kaplan is our guest for an in-depth discussion of his latest book Wasteland. In this work, he examines how we have ended up in what feels like a permanent crisis. In doing so, Kaplan not only looks at today's geopolitical realities, but also turns his gaze to the past and to literature. T.S. Eliot's famous poem The Waste Land, to which the title refers, is an important source of inspiration. In his analysis, Kaplan draws parallels with the Weimar Republic: a period of instability and disruption that profoundly affected the course of world history.
