The river Schie has driven Delft's industrial and economic development for centuries. In the ‘Industrie aan de Schie’ exhibition at Royal Delft, you will discover 126 unique objects from ten loaners. From a beer mug from around 1350 to modern innovations. This exhibition shows how Delft has developed over the centuries.

A source of innovation and craftsmanship

Thanks to its strategic location on the Schie, Delft developed into a bustling trading centre as early as the 14th century. That spirit of enterprise is deeply embedded in the city's DNA and is still visible today. Where once ships full of merchandise moored, you now find innovative companies, creative makers and recreationalists enjoying the water. Along the Schie, both multinationals and small-scale craftsmen have found their place, each with their own story, driven by creativity and progressiveness. In the exhibition, you will discover these stories, told by former factory workers who share their experiences, bringing history to life. Their memories show how decisive their work and the river Schie were for the growth of Delft.

Makers of the City

In the exhibition Industrie aan de Schie, visitors delve into the stories of factory workers, entrepreneurs and inventors who shaped Delft's industry. A rich collection of objects from various loaners and personal testimonies from the oral history project creates a vivid picture of the development of the city and its industrial heritage. This combination of tangible memories and human stories offers a unique perspective on Delft as a city of makers, doers and thinkers.

Stories, Walks and more

An extensive fringe programme will be organised around the exhibition in collaboration with partners and Delft Marketing. These include lectures by experts, exclusive tours of special locations and walks along industrial heritage sites. This will make the influence of the Schie not only visible in the museum space, but also tangible in the city itself.
