Mesdags' Circle of Friends
Artistic, enterprising, stimulating and hospitable. The artist couple Hendrik Willem Mesdag and Sientje Mesdag-van Houten fulfilled a pivotal role in The Hague's social life. They supported new artistic talents and were aware of the diverse social classes at that time.
The Mesdags not only counted many artists among their friends, but also had many connections beyond that, which extended around the court and into political circles. And whenever there was something to celebrate, they were there.
The Mesdags' circle of friends, from painters, members of the Royal family to leading politicians, played a very important role in their lives. They encouraged them artistically and bought their art. They celebrated life with them. The artworks in this presentation offer an insight into their network and the life of the artist couple.
