The exhibition 'The Grand Tour - Destination Italy' takes you back to the 17th and 18th centuries, when young British aristocrats went on a multi-year, educational journey across Europe after their education. Italy was the ultimate final destination. Cities like Rome, Venice and Naples were particularly popular.

Now you can think of it as a kind of gap year, but a Grand Tour back then could easily last one, two three or even more years. Along the way, the young men learned about art, architecture and culture. They liked to take away tangible memories for their British (country) homes - not photographs or maps, but their own portraits, cityscapes or Roman statues. The 'must haves' were the Canalettos -paintings of Venice, so you had a piece of 'The floating city' in your home.

For this exhibition, masterpieces are exceptionally borrowed from the imposing British country houses Burghley House, Holkham Hall and Woburn Abbey. Some of the artworks can now be seen in the Netherlands for the first time! The exhibition is accompanied by a special listening tour together with the podcast makers of 'All History Ever' and you can win a trip to Rome.
