Badru Temitayo - we are gods
The winner of the Audience Award Textile Biennale 2023. Images of Power is Badru Temitayo. Badru will have a solo exhibition that will bring together an overview of his most important works.
Badru Temitayo Taofeek (b 1983) is a locally and globally celebrated artist and has received several awards. He is a Nigerian artist from Abeokuta, Ogun State. Born in an area of rich textile history, he began studies in sculpture and textiles at the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta. At Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Temitayo further studied visual and applied arts and specialised in textile design.
For Temitayo, whose oeuvre includes hand-embroidered textiles, tapestries, paintings and sculptures, indigenous spirituality plays a major role. He also constantly draws inspiration from African myths, history, proverbs and folklore. His work, for instance, recalls the patterns of the typical Adire Eleko fabric where patterns are made in indigo blue fabric through a block printing technique. He combines these motifs with an intensive use of symbolic images to convey his commentary and future ideals. In all of Temitayo's work, his dexterity as a creator of high-quality and culturally relevant works emerges.
Temitayo has participated in several local and international exhibitions. The most recent exhibitions he participated in are Woven Feelings at Absa Gallery, Johannesburg, South Africa, Me x Him, which was held in Lagos, Nigeria, and of course Textile Biennial 2023. Images of Power at Museum Rijswijk.
