Cappella Amsterdam - Pärt & Bach
Arvo Pärt has been the most performed living composer for many years consecutively. Yet his monumental Kanon Pokajanen (1997) for a four-part choir was rarely heard – until Daniel Reuss and Cappella Amsterdam embraced the masterpiece.
Programme
- Johann Sebastian Bach Jesu, meine Freude (BWV 226)
- Johann Sebastian Bach Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied (BWV 225)
- Arvo Pärt Delen uit: Kanon Pokajanen
Also performed: motets by Bach. Bach wrote motets for special occasions, and often they were performed just once. For that reason they were also not properly archived. The odds are considerable that some have been lost forever. Fortunately, we can still enjoy these musical gems, for instance in this programme.
Daniel Reuss about the motets: “I sometimes refer to them as ‘the bible of music’. I have spent the past forty years living with these motets, I could perform them in my sleep. There are no pieces I have studied more intensively, or with which I feel a deeper connection. It is wonderful to have the opportunity to conduct these works again, after so many years.”
