When I think about the richness of painting throughout history, I could cry. So much beauty has been created! I am thoroughly fed up with contemporary programmatic art with its endless narrative, or rather sales pitch. But the biggest problem with it is the visual language, which is becoming increasingly weak and poor. Ten years ago, I tried to purify my own visual language. 

I use charcoal to draw dots that do not form pre-constructed lines. Nothing innovative, but necessary. Gradually, I build on simple abstract forms and motifs. As I work, I see if it can form an appealing whole in clear painterly language. A painting, whether abstract or realistic, must touch the soul like a song with an uncontrived melody. Like most artists at Pulchri Studio, I also support myself with a part-time job. This allows me to work independently and freely in peace and quiet. I am grateful to everyone who has given me the opportunity to show my work here at Pulchri Studio, for the first time outside my own city of Deventer.
