From 23 November to 21 December 2025, Galerie Maurits van de Laar will be exhibiting works by Erik Pape and Andrea Freckmann, focusing on everyday objects and nostalgia.

In this exhibition, Erik Pape and Andrea Freckmann each present their own vision of seemingly simple subjects. Pape paints everyday objects such as a vase or plant on wooden panels against a monochrome background. The austere composition gives these objects an almost poetic character.

For many years, Paris was the subject of Erik Pape's (1942) long career as a painter. In his more recent paintings on panel, he chooses to depict everyday objects such as a vase, plant or utensil against a monochrome background.
Their simplicity and concentration elevate these modest subjects to another level: how sublime can a flower, vase or bunch of asparagus be? Erik Pape has a parallel retrospective exhibition at Museum Rijswijk, until 1 March 2026

Andrea Freckmann (1970) explores the theme of nostalgia in her paintings, initially with images from her childhood in Germany in the 1970s, but now focusing on the picturesque Zeeland polder landscape with its cows and meadows. She takes a critical approach to the phenomenon of nostalgia because it is often misused in politics. To counterbalance the longing for the past, she integrates geometric patterns and crystalline forms into the representation, which are intended to open up a view to the future.
