Rotterdam artist Harry van der Woerd (1952) will be exhibiting his latest work in November in the Hardenbergzaal at Pulchri Studio in The Hague. Van der Woerd, who joined Pulchri Studio in 1975 immediately after graduating from the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts (now the Willem de Kooning Academy), is known for his industrial paintings full of light and poetry.

From industrial themes to poetic paintings

For almost fifty years, people, harbours, construction sites and the Maasvlakte have been an inexhaustible source of inspiration for Van der Woerd. His working method often begins outdoors, with plein air drawings and studies, which develop into large oil paintings in his studio. Light, colour and atmosphere play a key role in these works, giving even the rawest industrial scenes an almost romantic character..

New theme in the Hardenbergzaal

From 8 to 30 November, Van der Woerd will present a selection of his most recent work in the Hardenbergzaal. In addition to recognisable harbour scenes, he will display two monumental paintings of rain-soaked billboards — objects that have been marked by wind and weather, but which reveal beauty in their transience. The Spanish fishing port of Vigo (Galicia) is also a recurring motif in his oeuvre. The weathered boats and the world above and below sea level have his special attention.

An ode to light, industry and transience

The exhibition in The Hague offers a rich overview of spatial and two-dimensional work, in which Van der Woerd translates his fascination with industrial landscapes, light and transience into a visual language all his own. His work shows how even the most everyday industrial backdrop can be transformed into a poetic work of art.
