Les Filles de Illighadad
Less Filles (the daughters) all come from Illighadad, a remote nomad territory in the Sahara. Front woman Fatou Seidi Ghali is the only Touareg guitarist from Niger; she secretly learned electric guitar from her brother. Fatou uses a new division of male-female roles by emphasizing ‘tende’, songs accompanied by hand clapping and percussion, traditionally performed by women. With hypnotic guitar riffs, intoxicating polyphonic singing and a driving rhythm, the Touareg music of Les Filles is entirely up to date.
