Loek Prins - Glenorchy
11 Jan - 11 Feb
Exhibition
A photographic impression of the New Zealand landscape around Glenorchy, seen through the eyes of a creator from The Hague.
In the summer of 2024, my friend Gerry from New Zealand was back in the Netherlands for a while. I got to know him when he walked into the bronze foundry where I was working at the time to take a course in bronze casting. I then hired him as an employee and taught him a lot over the course of a few years, which wasn't difficult because he was eager to learn. This earned me some 'credits' with him, and when I asked him what he would think if I came to stay with him for a longer period of time, he was immediately enthusiastic.
So I left at the beginning of February. I was able to stay with Gerry, but other than that, not much else was set in stone. Of the eleven weeks I spent in New Zealand, I travelled around the South Island for about four weeks and spent the rest of the time in Glenorchy, exploring the surrounding area. Gerry mainly took me into nature, to places where there are no paths, always looking for clues as to where gold might be found. We searched seriously a few times and eventually found some. Not enough, of course. After years of mainly photographing work pieces, I was able to really lose myself in taking photographs in New Zealand, which was very enjoyable. Then I felt the need to share them, which resulted in this selection of seven photographs for the Gaanderij. A glimpse of Genorchy.
