Abstract painting in which colour, form and layering take centre stage: Marja van Bijlevelt's work is an exploration of balance and meaning.

In her work, Marja van Bijlevelt explores the fundamental relationship between the colour of form and the form of colour. She seeks a solution to the tension between idea and matter, between form and colour.

Layering plays a central role in this, not only as a visible aspect but also as an essential part of the creative process. Each layer represents a new approach, a next step in her ongoing search for balance and meaning. Her work is based on a formal and expressive approach to abstractions and reductions of colour and movement. The brush serves as an instrument of exploration, with which she explores and shifts the boundaries of the image. The result refers to her own internal issues, a personal logic that unfolds within the limitations of the canvas.

In recent years, certain themes have recurred in her work: the right format, without fixed dimensions or proportions; order and contrast; the use of grids; a limited but intense use of colour. The edges of the work, the repetition in series and the apparent simplicity, which is never simple, together form a search for the sensation of light, colour and unexpected possibilities.
