Schnittke’s Suite in the Old Style puts a playful, 20th-century spin on music from the Baroque and Classical periods. Ysaÿe’s Sonata in C minor focuses on virtuosity and the expressive power of the violin. This is followed by Britten’s Sonata for Cello and Piano, a work full of contrasts. Lyrical melodies, rhythmic energy and moments of tranquillity alternate, showcasing Britten’s personal musical style.
A highlight of the programme is Rachmaninoff’s impressive Sonata for Cello and Piano. Captivating melodies and intense emotions take centre stage, whilst the cello and piano engage in a powerful musical dialogue.
