Press freedom lecture 2025 - Cartoonists under fire
Lecture/debate
As part of Press Freedom Day, or World Press Freedom Day, the NVJ, NDP, Press Freedom Fund and Sound & Vision are organising the Press Freedom Lecture. This edition, Ann Telnaes, former cartoonist at the Washington Post, will be interviewed by journalist Marieke de Vries.
Press freedom and political satire
On 3 May, Press Freedom Day is celebrated worldwide, a moment of remembrance, solidarity and discussion on the importance of free journalism. In this context, the Press Freedom Lecture will take place on Monday 14 April, with Ann Telnaes, creator of editorial cartoons and former cartoonist for The Washington Post, as the keynote speaker. Telnaes recently resigned after one of her cartoons criticising owner Jeff Bezos, among others, was rejected. During the lecture, she will talk to former NOS America correspondent Marieke de Vries about the role and threats of political cartoons, and how they relate to press freedom in the Netherlands and Europe.
World Press Freedom Day
The Press Freedom Lecture is an initiative of the Press Freedom Day Committee and takes place ahead of International Press Freedom Day on 3 May. This day, established by the United Nations and UNESCO in 1993, is dedicated worldwide to the protection of free journalism. It commemorates murdered journalists, calls for solidarity for colleagues who are imprisoned or unable to carry out their work freely, and stresses the importance of open debate on press freedom.
