Sjoerd Eltink & Maja Brouwer - Ophelia: Splash Zone
A queer theatrical concert that explores gender, humanity, repertoire and the necessities of self-expression. Worker and education Sjoerd Eltink: HKU Acting
Since her first stage appearance in 1600, Ophelia has been an inspiration within all art forms. The loss of her ethereal beauty resulted in a limited view of femininity and the fetishization of passive suffering. Time and again, by portraying her as weak, she has become the hollow muse of a vicious, misogynistic circle. In this ritual, her madness is deconstructed and the concept of gender is reconsidered. What if her death was a conscious choice? Could those fiery eyes beneath the surface of the water radiate the ultimate freedom? Prepare to get wet. Inspired by William Shakespeare, Virginia Woolf, Ambroise Thomas, Heiner Müller, Magda Romanska, Sasha Velour, Dita von Teese, Joshua Serafin and Wende Snijders.
