Philip Akkerman - Alphabet self-portraits
27 May - 17 Aug
Exhibition
From 27 May, Museum Huis van het Boek presents a special exhibition by Hague artist Philip Akkerman: Alphabet Self-Portraits. This colourful series of 26 new paintings forms an intriguing interplay between identity, form and imagination. The exhibition also marks the festive reopening of the renovated museum shop, where a unique jumper with Akkerman's letter X is also available.
An Alphabet of Faces
For decades, Philip Akkerman has been known for his daily self-portraits, painted in his studio in The Hague. His subject is always the same: his own face. Yet he manages to vary endlessly within this limitation. For this new series, he found inspiration in the alphabet. Each painting depicts a letter, in which his self-portrait is imaginatively distorted sometimes abstract, sometimes playful, sometimes architectural or as an echo of Arcimboldo's fruit and flower figures. The result is a one-off project in which Akkermans has literally and figuratively transformed himself into letters, a quirky alphabet of faces.
