The Large Dollhouse, the highlight of Lita de Ranitz's miniature collection, was equipped with all modern conveniences. But this is not the only thing that makes her dollhouse special: it takes you back to The Hague around 1910.

In September 1910, the flag was hoisted on a house under construction in The Hague. It was a very special house: a modern villa in miniature, built for lady Lita de Ranitz. The Big Dollhouse, as this miniature villa became known, was equipped with all modern conveniences: hot and cold running water, central heating, electricity and even a vacuum cleaner for the maid.

From 1910 onwards, Lita traveled throughout Europe in search of miniatures and art to decorate her villa. For the dollhouse she collected a unique collection of paintings in miniature format by Anton Mauve, Johan Barthold Jongkind and Hendrik Akkeringa, among others. The dollhouse grew into a landmark in The Hague and even had its own postal address for your own dollhouse correspondence!

Take a trip back in time and discover The Hague around 1910. A period in which the spirit of the 19th century was still alive and in which modern gadgets penetrated the household, but the interiors still refer back to times gone by. A time when there was still a clear class difference between 'madam' and the servants, but when an unmarried rich lady could shape her own life. The Great Dollhouse is a unique window on that world, together with a rich collection of twenty dollhouses and other historical miniature treasures that Lita de Ranitz left behind.
