Take care of the resistance
10 Mar - 19 Jul
From 25 February to 19 July 2026, the National Archives will host an exhibition about the 1940-1945 Foundation, featuring personal stories, historical images and archival documents.
How did members of the resistance fare after the war? And who took care of them and their families? The exhibition Care for the Resistance shows how the 1940-1945 Foundation has been committed to caring for and recognising former members of the resistance and their surviving relatives for more than eighty years.
Posters, leaflets and stamps show how the Foundation raised millions after the war for convalescent homes and support for families. There is also attention for personal stories of former resistance fighters, the role of the Foundation in reburials such as that of Hannie Schaft, and the moral dilemmas over the years. Think of questions about pension rights for communist resistance fighters or Jewish England sailors.
What about Hannie Schaft?
Hannie Schaft (1920–1945) was a Dutch student and resistance fighter during the Second World War. She became known as 'the girl with red hair' and, together with other members of the resistance, carried out acts of sabotage and attacks on Germans and collaborators. She was arrested in March 1945 and shot shortly before the end of the war. Hannie Schaft became one of the most famous symbols of the Dutch resistance.
The exhibition was previously on display at the Resistance Museum Amsterdam and has been enriched at the National Archives with items from its own collection.
