Théodore Rousseau (1812-1867) and Charles-François Daubigny (1817-1878) were among the artists who moved to the French village of Barbizon in the ancient forests of Fontainebleau around the mid-nineteenth century. There they painted and drew nature without idealizing it. The Mesdags brought together a large collection of works by the artists of Barbizon, most of which are drawings by Daubigny and Rousseau.

In Rousseau's drawings, precise observation and inner experience come together. He saw trees as the "souls of the forest" and wanted to represent that. He experimented a lot with material and technique. Daubigny was also strongly attracted to nature. In his moody and expansive landscapes, the atmosphere was more important than the precise depiction of the environment

Charles-François Daubigny
Daubigny often chose moody and expansive landscapes as subjects of his drawings, which he preferably drew on an elongated paper. The atmosphere was more important than the precise representation of the environment.
