What do cold weather, choral music, trombones, Venice and Austrian monasteries have in common? More than you might think. In this winter concert programme, Chordiality takes you on a musical journey full of contrasts: from icy sounds to deep, warming choral music.

A winter concert filled with choral music, trombones, and warmth

The focus is on the music of Anton Bruckner, the shy and extremely precise composer from the monastery of Sankt Florian. In his highly romantic motets and chorales, he managed to create exceptional depth and warmth. His choral works reveal how he was inspired by the strict polyphony of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and the compelling, dramatic sound world of Richard Wagner, which deeply moved Bruckner.

The programme is given extra lustre by a special collaboration with a trombone trio led by Tim Dowling, trombonist with the Residentie Orkest and specialist in historical performance practice. The combination of choir and trombones creates a rich, authentic sound. Highly romantic trombones reinforce the intensity of Bruckner's music, while Renaissance trombones take us back musically to Venice, where the monumental sounds of Giovanni Gabrieli come to life.

And yes, Brr... also stands for cold. The programme explores winter in all its forms: from the icy atmosphere of Vivaldi's Venetian Winter, through Henry Purcell's chilling Cold Song, to the warm, noble trombone sounds of Kindermann.
