The World Press Photo Foundation presents a selection of stories that have won awards between 2000 en 2021. These stories are about the challenges faced by women, girls and communities around the world. This photo exhibition Resilience - stories of women inspiring change can be seen from June 1st until June 20th in the Atrium of the City Hall The Hague and is part of the Hague Justice Week.

Gender equality and justice are fundamental human rights. Both are of great importance to communities around the world. Yet women around the world face deeply rooted inequalities and remain underrepresented in political and economic roles. Globally, in 2021, women represented only 26.1% of 35,500 parliamentary seats, only 22.6% of the more than 3,400 ministerial positions and 27% of all leadership positions. In addition, violence against women is a global problem, their health and protection at poor levels. It is estimated that one in three women will experience physical violence or sexual abuse during her lifetime.

This photo exhibition emphasizes the importance that the Netherlands attaches to women's rights, gender equality and justice. The photos, taken by 17 photographers of 13 different nationalities, tell stories about topics such as sexism, violence against women, reproductive rights and access to equal opportunities. They put a magnifying glass on how women's and gender issues have evolved in the 21st century, as well as how photojournalism gives them a face.
